Personal and family documents, as well as records related to Lewis’s professional activities outside music. This series includes records about Lewis’s automobile accident in 1962; his career with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (1964-1984); assorted honors, awards, and related ephemera; autobiographical writings authored by Lewis; and family member obituaries. This series also contains materials about and published after Lewis’s death in 1994, including newspaper obituaries, his funeral book, correspondence received by his widow, and posthumous honors.

Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open for research by appointment, with the exception of one scrapbook in Series 3 due to fragility. Advance notice is required for access because materials are stored offsite.

Audiovisual recordings have not been transferred. Patrons may view an item’s original container and/or carrier, but the recordings themselves are not available for playback due to preservation concerns. Patrons may request access to viewing/listening copies via onsite appointment, however recordings on obsolete formats may not be available. Contact Archives staff for further information.
