Biographical / Historical

Berklee College of Music was founded by Lawrence Berk in 1945, under the name Schillinger House. Though Berk's initial intention was to train musicians in the Schillinger System of Musical Composition (SSOMC), Schillinger House soon outgrew its name and was renamed Berklee School of Music in 1954; subsequently, the school was again renamed Berklee College of Music in 1970. An ever-expanding community, Berklee opened its first international campus in Valencia, Spain, in 2012 and underwent a historic merger with The Boston Conservatory in 2016. The core curriculum of arranging, composition, and ear training still exists today, and can be seen in course catalogs from the 1940s through the present day.
