Scope and Contents
This collection comprises material created or compiled by Muhl during her tenure as Berklee's fourth president: meeting materials (agendas, attachments, memos, notes), area and project reports, remarks, inauguration ephemera, a bound copy of the score for Muhl’s “Smoke and Mirrors,” space allocation plans, some project files, and a carved artwork gifted to Muhl by a Berklee student. This collection contains no digital records.

Conditions Governing Access
Collection is closed for 30 years (with some personnel files restricted for 75 years) from date of creation except to senior leadership or by special permission from the Associate Director of Archives and Special Collections. Advance notice is required for access because materials are stored offsite.

Biographical Note
Erica Muhl served as Berklee’s fourth president and first female president, assuming leadership in July 2021. As president of Berklee, Muhl helped return the institution to in-person instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic, created a new division called International Learning Environments (ILE), appointed several senior leadership positions, and launched a strategic planning process. Muhl departed Berklee in July 2023.
Formerly, Muhl served as the founding executive director and dean of the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation (IYA) at The University of Southern California (USC), the dean of the USC Roski School of Art and Design, and the associate dean of the USC Thornton School of Music, where she was also a professor of Composition. Muhl also maintained a career as a composer of contemporary music.

Arrangement
Processing staff grouped folders containing like record types, but materials have not been further arranged.
Custodial History
Materials were maintained in the Office of the President (OOTP) by Muhl and collated by OOTP staff following her departure.
Acquisition Note
Transferred from the Office of the President, November 2, 2023.
Separated Materials
Processing staff removed and securely destroyed confidential prospect files. Three Berklee hats were removed from the collection and assigned to the Berklee artifacts collection.
Processing Information
Materials were assembled by OOTP and transferred to the Archives in labeled folders or binders but in no discernable order. Processing staff transferred materials into acid-free folders and boxes, grouping like record types where distinguishable, but otherwise imposed no further arrangement.
