Scope and Contents
This collection consists of teaching materials created and compiled in the 1980s and 1990s by former College faculty member and chair of the Harmony department, Barrie Nettles. Materials include workbooks, exams, and instructional recordings for Harmony, Arranging, and Ear Training courses.

Conditions Governing Access
Collection is open for research by appointment. Advance notice is required for access because materials are stored offsite.
Audiovisual recordings have not been transferred. Patrons may view an item’s original container and/or carrier, but the original recordings are not available for playback due to preservation concerns. Patrons may request access to viewing/listening copies via onsite appointment, however recordings on obsolete formats may not be available. Contact Archives staff for further information.
Biographical note
Composer, arranger, and woodwinds musician Barrie Nettles (d. 2017) was a foundational member of the Harmony department at Berklee College of Music from 1972 until his retirement in 2006.
Nettles attended the Navy School of Music. He then worked as a music therapist at Pennsylvania State School and Hospital, as staff arranger for the U.S. Army Band of the Pacific in Hawaii, and as an authors’ agent licensing Broadway musicals for amateur productions. He graduated from Berklee in 1969 and began teaching at the college in 1972. During his 34-year tenure, he taught almost all of the harmony and arranging courses at the college, authored many of the core harmony texts and workbooks, and created the Scoring for Woodwinds course.
